Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), said on Sunday that Brazil's delegation accomplished its three main targets in the Pan American Games.
"We have accomplished our three main aims, which were to break the records of 123 medals and 29 golds, apart from occupying the third place in the overall medals' chart," said Nuzman.
Those records were established in the previous edition held in 2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. At the time, Brazil finished fourth in the medal chart, after the U.S., Cuba and Canada.
In the Games that took place in Rio de Janeiro, the hosts won a total of 161 medals, including 54 golds, 40 silvers and 67 bronzes, and surpassing the Canadians on the chart. In fact, the Brazilians got to threat the once out-of-reach Cubans.
Nuzman also said that from now on the committee will work towards next year's Beijing Olympics.
"We already have 96 athletes over 10 sports qualified for Beijing. In Rio, we did not get medals in only six sports. That leads us to the thinking that we can have medals in a bigger number of sports than we had in Athens," added COB's President.
In the 2004 Olympics, Brazil won 10 medals, including five golds, two silvers and three bronzes coming from seven sports, namely equestrian, sailing, volleyball, beach volleyball, football, athletics and judo.
