Track and field's world governing body IAAF drew back two youth medals from a Bahraini athlete because he lied about his age.
Middle-distance runner Taher Tareq Mubaraq claimed he was born on Dec. 1, 1989, allowing him to compete in several world junior races between 2005 and 2006. The International Association of Athletics Federations determined that he falsified a birth certificate and was actually born on Dec. 1, 1986.
The IAAF annulled all of Mubaraq's results in age-restricted races, including his gold medal in the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco, open only to athletes 17 or younger, and silver in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing.
The world juniors are open only to athletes 18 or 19 on Dec. 31 in the year of the competition.
Mubaraq is a former Kenyan who switched his name from Dennis Kipkurui Sang.
In December 2006, the IAAF cleared middle-distance runner Ali Belai Mansour of any wrongdoing. The investigation into long-distance runner Khamis Aadam Ismael is continuing. He won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2006 world juniors.
