Australia has set a target for a top five finish at next year's Beijing Olympic Games, said Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates on Wednesday.

He told reporters in Sydney that he expects Australia to have the third largest team at the Beijing Games behind hosts China and the United States.

He said those two nations and Russia are expected to be the big medal winners at the 2008 Olympics, while Australia would be in the next tier with Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Great Britain.

Australia finished in fourth place on the medal table at both the Sydney Games in 2000 and the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Coates, who has just returned from a visit to Beijing, said he is confident of "a very, very good Games."

He also said the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee is doing everything it can to combat air pollution.
