A FIFA inspection team on Monday started its mission in Brasilia, a candidate city to host games of the 2014 World Cup if Brazil would be granted as the host country.
FIFA inspectors will visit the stadium Mane Garrincha, named after the football legend in 1950s. Then, they will visit the Institute of Heart, considered as one of the best in Brazil.
In the afternoon, FIFA inspectors will have a technical meeting with representatives of the city of Brasilia and in the end of the day, they will be received by the president Lula.
According to statistics of Brazil's Ministry of Justice, Brasilia is the less violent among all the 18 candidates cities, with just 9.0 homicide for every 100 thousand inhabitants. In addition, its chain of hotels is also excellent with 28 thousands beds.
To reinforce the city's chance as a World Cup city, the local government plans to enlarge the stadium Mane Garrincha. The works will be completed in 2010 with an investment of 400 million reals (about 200 million U.S. dollars).
After that, the capacity of the stadium will be expanded from 30 thousand seats actually to 90 thousand seats.
After Brasilia, the 10 inspectors from different countries will go to Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre e Sao Paulo.
In total, 18 Brazilian cities have demanded to host World Cup games, and the FIFA inspection team will visit five candidate cities - Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Porto Alegre - during their nine-day trip.
Brazil is the only country bidding to host the event, which is due to be staged in South America under FIFA's rotation system. But at first, Brazil should meet the FIFA standards in stadium and transportation.
FIFA's final decision will be made on Oct. 30.
