Tyson Gay completed a golden double after winning the men's 200 meters title at the world championships on Thursday.
Gay, who took the 100m gold in 9.85 seconds last Sunday, clocked 19.76 seconds for the 200m win and broke the world championships record of 19.79 set by fellow American Michael Johonson in the 1995 Gothenburg worlds.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt won the silver in 19.91 and Wallace Spearmon took the bronze in 20.05.
Gay became the third-ever double dash winner in world championships history.
"It feels so great," Gay said. "Maurice Greene is one of my idols and I am proud to do the double like him. Usain Bolt came out so fast and I had to work hard to catch him. I should be thankful to him to make this such a fast race."
After his training partner Wallace Spearmon false started, co-favorite Usain Bolt of Jamaica tried all he could to get away from Gay in the lane inside. But it didn't work.
Even as Bolt unwound in the straight, Gay held then passed him, and won going away.
Gay added, "I have two golds and I want the third in relay. I beat the meet record of Michael Johnson and that is great feeling because he is also one of my idols.
"I believe it is possible to beat his world record, but I have to build up more strength. I knew that in the final one would have to run a 19.60-19.70 time."
Bolt was satisfied with the victory and also spoke high of Gay.
"I tried hard, but for the moment he is unbeatable," Bolt said of Gay. "I had a good start, good first 100m, then I was really trying hard, but he was better. It gives me a lot of motivation to work even harder for next season to be able to beat him."
