Ugandan former health minister Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi has promised to support the renovation of the dilapidated Rukungiri Stadium for the western district to host a track and field event in the near future.

Rukungiri district for the first time hosted the National Road Running Championships over the weekend and Muhwezi, who officiated as chief guest, was impressed.

"If we didn't have a standard road we wouldn't have hosted this event. Likewise we can't host track and field without a standard ground," said Muhwezi, quoted by Daily Monitor on Wednesday, praising the road condition of his hometown.

"So I promise to assist in all ways for this stadium to be in good shape so that we can have another event here in future," said the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura, one of the counties in the western Rukungiri district.

Awed by the number of participants and crowds that turned up for the event, Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) vice president administration Dominic Otuchet promised to give the district a chance of hosting in case they applied for another event.
