Former World No. 1 Martina Hingis suffered a surprise 5-7, 1-6 defeat to Chinese Peng Shuai at the second round of the China Open on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Swiss, who beat Peng in their only previous meet in last year's U.S. Open, was beaten by Peng in just one hour and nine minutes.

In the first set, both players held their serves and before Peng broke Hingis and held her own for a 7-5 victory.

In the second set, the Swiss looked tired and was out of

sorts. While Peng continued her bull-like performance and capitalized on her two break opportunities to shut out Martina 5-0.

Although Hingis saved her service game later, Peng won her final service game to get a convincing 6-1 victory.

In the third round, Peng Shuai will play third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France.
