Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) has turned to golf to raise funds as it is to hold the inaugural "Golf for Wildlife Fundraising" tournament this Saturday at Entebbe Golf Club.
UWEC is targeting to raise 60 million Ugandan shillings (36,000 U.S. dollars) from the one-day event that is expected to attract individuals and major corporations in the East African country.
"The 60 million shillings we hope to get from the tournament is just one of the activities we have lined up raise a bigger amount. We need to bring in more animals and maintaining them will need a good amount of money," said UWEC marketing officer Emma Masaba.
Masaba was quoted by New Vision on Thursday as appealing to golfers and companies to contribute to the cause of conserving wildlife by participating in the tournament.
Nine companies have so far confirmed their participation. The 18-hole tournament that will be played on a stable-ford format will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. local time.
