An Italian athletics coach has been detained by Kenyan police on charges of working illegally in the African country, according to local media reports.

Regional police commander Anjeru Karuru said that Monsignor Renato Canova, who was arrested in Iten, Rift Valley province on Wednesday, had conducted coaching job without a work permit.

"We arrested him on Friday morning and took him to court to answer charges relating to his work permit," Karuru told local newspaper The Standard.

The Italian coach's arrest and subsequent appearance in court was clouded under secrecy. Canova was whisked out of the court premises after photographers staking for pictures walked away.

Canova coaches Saif Saeed Shaheen, William Kalya and Albert Chepkurui, who have defected to Qatar.
