Ajax announced on Thursday that former player and coach Johan Cruijff returned to the Amsterdam club as an advisor and will be part of a technical advisory group.

In the coming weeks there will be more discussions on a further role of Cruijff at Ajax.

Cruijff led Ajax and the Netherlands to great success in the 1970s, capturing the European Champions Cup with Ajax in 1971, 1972 and 1973 and leading Holland to runner-up at the 1974 World Cup. As a coach he won the European Cup Winners Cup with Ajax in 1987 and after that he managed FC Barcelona's Dream Team in the 1990s.

In recent years Cruijff was one of the main critics of Ajax. He blamed the board for letting slip away the club philosophy of attacking and technical football with homegrown players.

Cruijff supported the appointment of Frank de Boer as successor of Martin Jol in December 2010 and looks ready to step in himself, too.
