Sixteen disabled Cuban athletes assured their passes to participate in the Paralympic Games Beijing 2008, figure that may increase since the classification phase will conclude on December 31, Granma official daily reported on Thursday.

So far Cuba has eight athletes classified: one in judo, four in athletics, three in table tennis and one in swimming, Granma local daily reported on Thursday.

Cuba's national athletes pre-selection is integrated by some 60athletes, who will soon begin to get ready to participate in classification tournaments for the summer games.

Cuba's athletes achieved good results in the Para Pan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007 and they also obtained good results in the world championship for blind and feeble sighted people held in Sao Paulo, both in Brazil, as well as in the continental event for deaf people in Venezuela.

Cuba accomplished 5th place by countries, with 51 athletes and a historic medal winning of 48 gold, 21 silver and 11 bronze.

Cuba obtained a similar performance by countries (66th place) in Sao Paulo's World event, with 10 titles and an outstanding performance in judo, specialty in which Cuba ratified itself as champion.

Another good result was the Venezuelan continental event, where Cuba obtained second place by countries, winning 16 gold medals, five silver and seven bronze, only surpassed by Venezuela.

Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games will be held in September of 2008.
