Former African sprints queen Mary Onyali-Omagbemi said Nigeria was capable of winning three medals at the Beijing Olympics, opening on Aug. 8 in the Chinese capital, according to local media report.

Onyali-Omagbemi told newsmen in Lagos, that the medals would not come from track and field alone but also from other events.

The former national 100 and 200 meters champion decried Nigeria's preparations for the Games, saying it would be an added bonus if the contingent exceeded the three medals.

She said Nigeria's strength was in the relays. She called on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to embark on Youth Development Programs, to ensure the country did well at future Olympics.

Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua recently gave the NSC an eight-medal mandate from the Summer Games.
