American Sanya Richards finally won a gold at major competitions as she claimed the women's 400 meters title at the World Championships on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Richards, bronze winner at last year's Olympic Games, clocked 49.00 seconds for her first world title in four World Championships.
"Finally, I have owned a major title," she said. "Finally the hard work has paid off."
"I felt very confident, I hit my marks in the rounds. Before, I had difficulties standing the pressure. But now I am a better athlete."
Richard had collected over 10 titles in World Cups and World Athletics Finals, but she had never won a gold in World Championships or the Olympic Games. Her best result was a silver in the Helsinki worlds in 2005.
Jamaica's Shericka Williams, who won the silver medal at the Beijing Games, was second in a personal best of 49.32 and Russia's Antonina Krivoshapka won the bronze in 49.71.
"I feel good," Wiliams said. "To come out there with a personal best, that's very good. I did exactly what my coach said and it worked."
