The New York Yankees clinched their 27th World Series championship Wednesday, beating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6.

It was the team's first since winning three straight from 1998-2000 and the elusive 27th title is the most in all of sports in America.

Yankees' Hideki Matsui, the Series MVP, homered, doubled and singled, and tied Bobby Richardson's 49-year-old record for RBIs in a Series game. His two-run homer off Pedro Martinez in the second inning started the Yankees on their way. Baseball quarter-billion-dollar superstar Alex Rodriguez, pitcher Mariano Rivera and catcher Derek Jeter helped the Yankees wrap up a most successful season in their first year at the new 1.5-billion-U.S.-dollar Yankee Stadium.

After their run of 13 straight playoff appearances ended in 2008, the Yankees bolstered their roster in the off season, spending 424 million dollars to add three pitchers Teixeira, Sabathia and Burnett. They lead the majors with 103 wins during the regular season and then swept the Minnesota Twins for their first win in a playoff series since 2004 and advanced to the World Series with a six-game victory over the LA Angels in the American League Championship Series.

For the Phillies, it was a frustrating end to another scintillating season. They fell two wins short of becoming the first National League team to repeat as World Series championships since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds.
