Zambian boxer to fight for WBA Pan-African title

Zambia's bantamweight boxer Kennedy Kanyanta will face Namibia's Joseph Hilongwa for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan-African flyweight championship, the Post of Zambia reported on Tuesday.

The Namibian boxer was the current WBA Pan-African flyweight title holder.

The Zambian boxer's promoter and trainer Anthony Mwamba said the bout, set for March 18, was meant to give his boxer a chance to fight for the World Boxing Council title.

Kanyanta, who last month grabbed the International Boxing Organization (IBO) junior bantamweight champion after stopping South Africa's Zolile Mbityi, will face the Namibian opponent in the Namibian capital Windhoek.

"This will give him (Kanyanta) chance to prepare before he finally goes for the World Boxing Council," Mwamba was quoted as saying by the paper.

The Namibian boxer was unbeaten in nine professional bouts with four knockouts, while the Zambian boxer was also unbeaten with 10 wins of which eight were knockouts, according to the Post.

The promoter said his boxer will drop a weight class from super-flyweight to flyweight for his fight against the Namibian opponent.
