Bayern humiliates Bochum, Schalke stuns Werder Bremen

Top Bundesliga teams shortened their margin with leader Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday as Werder Bremen lost 2-0 to Schalke and record champion Bayern Munich defeated Bochum 5-1.

Hamburg humiliated new boys Nurnberg 4-0 and Gladbach defeated Hannover 5-3. Hoffenheim drew Frankfurt and Freiburg leveled with Cologne.

In a rough match Werder Bremen lost its clash with Schalke at Weser Stadium. Bremen and Schalke ended with a stuttering goalless first half, although both teams staged a well-organized defense.

Only two minutes after break, third-placed Schalke opened the scoring as young midfielder Lewis Holtby passed to striker Kevin Kuranyi who overcame Werder goalkeeper Tim Wiese and left-footed into an open goal.

Werder then pressed hard for the equalizer. But, it was Schalke who took the chance after a fast break to double the lead.

Striker Kevin Kuranyi dribbled through defense and passed to youngster midfielder Jan Moravek whose shot was deflected unstoppable for Werder goalie.

Unimaginative Werder was unable to fight back after the 2-0 deficit. Werder slipped from second to fourth position while Schalke moved from third to second with a one point difference to leader Leverkusen with 32 points.

Bochum suffered a 1-5 debacle at home against record champion Bayern Munich. From the start Bayern controlled the ball and pressed Bochum into defense. With 23 minutes played Bayern opened the scoring as striker Ivica Olic had enough time and space to cross into the box to fellow attacker Mario Gomez who volleyed home from the center of the box.

Bayern tasted blood and piled on the pressure. At the 33rd minute Bochum defender Mergim Mavraj doubled the lead for Bayern after an unsuccessful clearance attempt. Bayern couldn't get enough. Two minutes before interval striker Ivica Olic extended the lead. Olic poked home right footed from the center of the box.

Four minutes after break Bayern picked up where they left off. Striker Olic extended the lead to 4-0 with a header after a long cross by youngster defender Holger Badstuber.

At the 56th minute Bayern midfielder hammered the ball into the roof of the net to score his first Bundesliga goal. Bochum defender Christian Fuchs scored consolation goal with a dead ball goal at the 75th minute. Bayern jumped to third place with 30 points.

Hamburg defeated Nurnberg 4-0. Both teams had opportunities to open scoring but neither could convert chances in the first half. After interval Hamburg turned up as two goals by midfielder Eljero Elia, one by defender Marcell Jansen and one by youngster Tunay Torun sealed the victory for Hamburg which remains fifth.

A weird match with three own goals between Gladbach and Hannover ended in a 5-3 victory for Gladbach.

Hoffenheim tied Frankfurt 1-1 in an unspectacular game. Hoffenheim opened the scoring with a controversial penalty by Sejad Salihovic. At the 61st minute Pirmin Schwelger leveled for Frankfurt. Sowith Hoffenheim remains sixth.

Freiburg-Cologne ended in a goalless draw.
