Spanish La Liga club Villarreal sacked coach Ernesto Valverde on Sunday due to a series of poor results.
The decision was taken following the 2-0 defeat at home to Osasuna, which leaves Villarreal tenth in the Spanish top flight soccer league with 26 points from 20 games.
"Villarreal has rescinded the contract of coach Ernesto Valverde after the defeat against Osasuna. While we wait for news on a new coach, we wish to thank him for his work and wish him the best of luck in his future trajectory," said a statement on the Villarreal website.
Valverde, who had been successful in his previous jobs with Athletic Club Bilbao, Espanyol and Greek outfit Olympiakos, with whom he won a league and cup double, is the sixth coach to lose his job in the La Liga this season.
Early rumors have located former Brondy and Getafe coach Michael Laudrup as Valverde's possible successor.
