Beijing Olympic opening ceremony boycott a "chicanery" in public relations

U.S.-China relations are vital to the American interests, says a signed article in the "New Republic" Weekly of the United States. The article notes that the boycott of the upcoming Beijing Olympic opening ceremony poses only a "chicanery", which is futile and runs counter to what one desires.

The article carried by the "New Republic" Weekly on April 17 is written by Steven Clemons, who is a Senior Fellow and Director of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation and publisher of the popular political blog the Washington Note.

A boycott of the 2008 Olympic Games represents an offense to leaders and people in China, and let other countries see the United States has once again opted to resort to a chicanery, says Clemons in his article. The boycott of Olympic opening ceremony will only be detrimental to the US-China cooperation in the nuclear weapery, climate change, monetary and other fields.

Moreover, the US government should not exploit the Beijing Olympic Games to criticize China's human rights situation, he said, adding that if it also acknowledges in its criticism of China that the nation has enabled hundreds of millions of people to rid them of their poverty with an amazing speed while a marked improvement have been scored to some extent in the human right situation of its people, and this viewpoint could be accepted more easily.
