Xu Jicheng, the deputy director of the Media Operations Department from the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, recently spoke about the upcoming media war for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Within a matter of time, there will be a strong lineup of more than 2,000 people giving assistance to an army of 21,600 reporters. When asked about the functions of the Media Operations Department,Xu said, "we will have to provide the 21,600 registered reporters with equipment, facilities and services that operate and run smoothly; and guarantee them the best possible coverage of the Olympic Games."

He added that the Media Operations Department is one of the nearly 30 departments within the Olympic Organizing Committee. The department has now recruited a cast of more than 340 people: a significant growth from the humble beginning in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games when there were only 4 or 5 people. By the year 2008, volunteers and well-selected postgraduates from different universities will join the media service and assist the 21,600 reporters (1:10 expected ratio).

A good portion of recruited staff are veteran reporters and experienced sports correspondents. The management staff involved in the larger sporting events has been hand-picked from a number of candidates coming from all over China.

"In addition, we also set up a news service: the ONS. In time, all the competition information will be pooled onto the intra-net, Infor 2008; and will feed reporters with various, on demand information," Xu said.

As for the reporters' identification, Xu said the organizing committee will create a uniform registration certificate: a 1/4 inch – A4 paper that gives identifying information such as name and work unit; and is linked to a computer system.

He added that a sophisticated inspection system would be launched the day of the event, as a way to detect fake reporters. Media staff will be allowed to view media channels and, just by showing their certificates, can take advantage of the various services provided.
