The South Korean government has decided to develop a new "smart" highway allowing cars to move at the maximum speed of 160 km per hour by 2016, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to the Korean Herald, the Construction Ministry will introduce "cutting-edge" communication technologies into the highway in a bid to speed up the flow of vehicles.
The smart highway will increase safety measures on the high-speed road by developing various sensors which will help prevent possible car accidents and is able to automatically detect dangers to motorists, the ministry told the daily newspaper.
According to the ministry, the new transport system will cost about 150 billion won (163 million U.S. dollars). The South Korean government will build a test road by 2013.
