The Angolan government here on Monday host a string of activities to celebrate the World Habitat Day, with UN Executive Secretary for Urban Settlement Anna Tibaijuca participating a main celebration in the capital Luanda.
Luanda, the capital of Angola, is chosen by the United Nations to host the main celebration event held on the first Monday of October of every year as part of the UN's resolution on Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat).
Attending the celebration activity taking place for the first time in the African continent included ministers of housing of African countries, particularly those from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
The celebration activities included cultural activities, awards issuing ceremony and keynote speeches delivered by some African government officials.
The event that has been celebrated since 1985 throughout the world intends to remind the nations and societies of the importance of housing as a human basic need for the construction of cities and fair and democratic societies.
With the theme "Harmonious Cities", this year's celebration aims to elevate the consciousness of the societies about the state of the cities and the basic rights for adequate housing for everyone.
UN-Habitat is the UN agency that responds for the promotion of the social, environmental and sustainable development of the human settlements, with the main purpose of securing appropriate housing for everyone.
