Can you imagine that in the future you will be able to drive a car using only your brain?

A thought-operated car driving system was successfully developed in the three-dimensional virtual environment, according to the list of the latest scientific and technological achievements released by the China Association for Science and Technology.

Zhao Qibin, one of the inventors of the system and a PhD candidate at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said that this technology can control a vehicle via a computer using the imaginary thoughts of human beings, instead of using a steering wheel or a joystick.

He explained that when the human brain is thinking and imagining, a lot of weak brain wave signals are generated, and when different movements are imagined, different modes of brain wave signals are generated in different brain regions.

Upon receiving these signals, after an accurate analysis the computer can identify them and then send command signals to relevant equipment to control the vehicle, said Zhao.

He also added that thought-operated driving is only one possible application for this technology. The study will be able to help also paralyzed individuals to control external devices including wheelchairs, computer mouses and prosthetic limbs with just the use of their brains.
