ARISS Program approved after two years of preparation
Principal of Nanjing No.3 Middle School said that they applied for the membership of ARISS Program in April 2005 and submitted the formal application package in June 2006. Since then, the ARISS headquarters have assigned special representative to visit the school for detailed inspection on its Amateur Radio''s application quality, technical capabilities, promotional programs, educational programs, etc. Early this year, the principal of ARISS Asia-Pacific region formally wrote to the school and confirmed that their application has been approved and the school now is among the waiting list for "dialogue to astronauts."
Earlier, the students of Tsinghua University Middle School filed the application for the membership of the SEREX Program of NASA in 2002, and the application was approved. But due to technical reasons, they have to use Australian Amateurs Radio to conduct dialogue in English to the astronauts in the space. The SEREX Program is a communication project to use amateur radio to realize dialogue between young people on the earth and astronauts in the space. Now the SEREX Program has been replaced by ARISS Program. So far, there have been more than 200 middle schools in the world participated in the program successfully.
Collecting questions from the community
From August 4th to 10th, Nanjing No.3 Middle School invited questions to astronauts from the whole society. So far it has collected more than 80 questions through the Internet and telephone hotline. The questions involve issues of the space, space flight, the life of astronauts, etc. The school will choose 15 to 20 questions from the pool and submit them to NASA. Students with selected questions will be able to participate in training and might get the opportunity to talk directly to the astronauts in the space later.
