European semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics Ltd. announced, at a press conference in Singapore on March 24, that they had managed to produce a portable chip to detect the bird flu virus.
This chip, named VereFlu, can scan and identify various pathogens and genes through a one-time exam in two hours. The detected matter includes the influenza virus in humans, which contains the bird flu virus.
At present, the one-time exam method can only detect one type of virus; and takes several days or even weeks to produce a result.
In addition, the chip VereFlu can distinguish between influenza types A and B, the treatment-resistant virus, and the variation of the virus which contains the bird flu H5N1 virus.
The R&D of this chip lasted more than one year; and underwent clinical trials last year at Singapore's National University Hospital.
