Three swans found dead in northeastern France have tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, the Agriculture Ministry said Thursday. Officials have set up a control zone about 1 km around a pond, where the young swans were found dead, in Assenoncourt district in northeastern France, the ministry said.
On Tuesday, the ministry said it suspected the dead swans were infected by the deadly virus and initiated protective measures around the area. The H5N1 bird flu virus, which experts fear could transmute into deadly human influenza, has also been found in wild birds in Hungary, Britain, Germany and the Czech Republic this year. The H5N1 virus has killed nearly 200 people out of more than 300 cases globally since 2003, according to the World Health Organization.
