The global Live Earth concerts have kicked off in Sydney, as performers told the crowd to stand united and fight against global warming. The concert, which is under way in Sydney''s Aussie Stadium, is the first of a series of music events in eight countries. The aim of the concerts is to raise awareness about climate change and pressure governments to reduce greenhouse gases by 90 percent by 2050. An estimated 2 billion people around the world are expected to watch the concerts which will be held in Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Hamburg, London, Rio de Janeiro and then finally New York. There will even be an amateur band playing at the British Antarctic Survey Station in Antarctica. Up to 45,000 people are expected to attend the Sydney concert, which started Saturday morning with a traditional Aboriginal welcoming ceremony and a message from former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore in Washington DC. Appearing on video screens to formally launch the worldwide initiative, Gore said "Thank you for coming today and thank you for being the very first to launch this movement to help solve the climate crisis."
