Seventy-four teenagers were taken to hospital with food poisoning eating at a boarding school in north China's Shanxi Province on Thursday.

The students at Haiquan Middle School began vomiting at around 2:00 a.m. and were taken to two local hospitals in Xinjiang county, where they were diagnosed with food poisoning, said an official with the Shanxi provincial department of education.

The health bureau and quarantine authorities of Xinjiang began to investigate the accident at 8:00 a.m. and have closed the school's dining hall.

More than 20 students, whose conditions were described as stable, were still under observation in hospital after the others were discharged, the official said.
