Doctors took a leech out of the urinary bladder of a 79-year-old man from Vietnam's northern Bac Giang province, local newspaper Pioneer reported Tuesday.

The leech, some 20 cm in length after sucking blood of the man named Nguyen Van May, sneaked into the bladder via his urethra when he was catching shellfish in rice fields submerged in water. The doctors also found 500 grams of clotted blood in the bladder.

Leeches, bloodsucking worms with segmented bodies, can primarily be found in freshwater lakes, ponds, or rivers.

The man is expected to be discharged from hospital on Tuesday.
