About 19,000 people in the Philippines were stricken with dengue, among whom 190 were killed, in the first nine months of the year, the local TV network GMA News reported Monday.
The death toll was down 4.6 percent compared with the same period last year, the report said, citing statistics from the Department of Health.
The mosquito-borne disease infected people ranging from 18 days to 98 years old, but 77 percent of the sufferers were below the age of 20. More than half of the infected were male, the department said.
Francisco Duque III, the health secretary, urged officials to continue their clean-up activities at least once a week and to remove nonessential containers that can hold water and become breeding places of mosquitoes that carry dengue.
