A cholera outbreak in Benin since July has killed at least one person, with 90 others infected by the disease, said reports on Monday.

The deadly infectious disease, often incurred by ingesting contaminated water or food, has resulted in a relatively small number of casualties largely due to free medication and other precautionary measures made available before the outbreak, according to the Beninese Health Ministry.

Cholera outbreaks are a regular occurrence in the Beninese economic capital Cotonou and its surrounding areas due to flooding during the rainy reason, say experts.

Insufficient sanitation, shortage of drinking water and inadequate infrastructure such as public toilets could also be responsible for outbreaks of the disease.
