Iran's Health Ministry said Wednesday that the influenza A/H1N1 has claimed the lives of 140 people across the country as the national tally of infections reaches 3,672, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
"The number of swine flu infections has recorded 3,672 in Iran, while 140 patients have died of the disease in the country," Health Ministry official Masoud Mardani told reporters.
The Ministry announced on Tuesday that it has purchased two million doses of A/H1N1 flu vaccine from France to help contain a sudden epidemic of the disease and the resultant high fatality rate in vulnerable groups, especially in the cold season, according to the report.
"200 billion Iranian Rials (about 20 million U.S. dollars) has been spent on purchase of the vaccines which will be imported to Iran by the next two or three weeks," Iran's Health Minister Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi was quoted as saying.
She also said that two million people who are considered as vulnerable groups, including diabetics and asthmatic patients, will be vaccinated in the first stage, according to Fars.
On Nov. 18, Iran announced that the flu has claimed the lives of 100 people and infected 3,128 across the country by then.
Iran's Ministry of Education has closed many schools around the country amid rising fears of an A/H1N1 flu epidemic.
