What initially looked to be a joyous parents' and daughter reunion 21 years after A Wei, and his wife, surnamed Xiang, in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region gave their infant girl up for adoption suddenly collapsed after DNA tests showed the girl was not related.
The couple said the girl was born on March 25, 1989 but shortly thereafter they thought they could not support her and arranged with a female doctor, surnamed Xie, for a wealthier couple to adopt her.
In 1991 A Wei accidentally met with Xie on a train and asked about his daughter's situation. Xie said his daughter was well and wrote down a detailed address for her in Nanning.
In the summer of 1992, Xiang and A Wei - who had moved from Nanning to Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province - returned temporarily and without identifying themselves found a girl "Xiaojie" at the address that Xie provided. They believed that the girl was their daughter and subsequently returned to Nanning and rented a room in the neighborhood so they could watch Xiaojie unobserved playing and coming and going from her home.
In 2009, Xiaojie went to a university and Xiang finally mustered the courage and wrote to her. Xiajie replied that she was adopted but born on March 19, 1989, not March 25. Xiang, though, ignored the discrepancy and arranged to do DNA test with the "daughter" which showed the three were not related.
