France announced Friday nominees for the 36th Cesar Awards, one of the most prestigious national film awards dubbed as French Oscar.
According to the Alain Terzian, president of the Academy of Technical Arts and Sciences, Xavier Beauvois' "Of Gods and Men" garnered 11 nominations including best film of the year, best director for Xavier Beauvois, best actor for Lambert Wilson, best supporting actor for Michael Lonsdale and Olivier Rabourdin, best screenplay and etc.
The film features stories between Algeira-stationed Trappist monks and their surroundings after they find themselves in an unclear fatal danger from terrorist threat putting an end to harmony with the largely Muslim population nearby.
Following the most popular "Of Gods and Men," Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" and Johann Sfar's biopic Gainsbourg shared the second place in terms of popularity as each was nominated in 8 categories, including best films of the year.
Some 3,812 members of the 4,179-member Academy have voted for the awards, the final winner of which is due to be unveiled on February 25 at Paris' Chatelet Theater. American actress, film director and producer Jodie Foster has been chosen to preside over the ceremony.
France's Cesar Award, first given out in 1975, was named after the sculptor Csar Baldaccini (19211998), who made the trophies of the awards.
It is worth noting that despite of the dim economic situation, France's box office hit a record high of 206.5 million tickets sold over 2010, according to latest statistics.
