More than 30 non-governmental organizations from Spain and Latin America on Wednesday signed a declaration calling on governments in the region to give priority to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The declaration, signed during the ongoing 17th International AIDS Conference here, urges the governments to treat the HIV/AIDS issue as a priority in bilateral and multilateral Ibero-American ties.

"We ask the governments of the region to place the HIV/AIDS issue as a priority in their political agendas," said Joan Tallada of the Latin American Council of the Organization with Services on HIV/AIDS.

Some 2.1 million people died of AIDS last year globally and about 33 million people worldwide have the HIV infection, according to the U.N.

About 25,000 scientists, policymakers and physicians are attending the 17th International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, which runs through Friday.
