By Monday, 60 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi so far this year, the Times of India reported Tuesday.
This is over three times the number of cases reported during dengue outbreak in the same period of the last two years. In 2007,15 cases were reported in the capital while in 2006, 19 dengue cases were reported till Aug. 25.
The sharp rise in the number of dengue cases in India capital and its neighboring areas has set the alarm bells ringing, the newspaper said.
Worried by the situation, India's National Vector Borne Disease Control Program has decided to take preventive steps to deal with the disease. "There is an alarming rise in the number of dengue cases this year. Due to an early monsoon, the weather is conducive for mosquito breeding," said Dr. GPS Dhillion, director of NVBDCP.
Experts say the number of cases may further rise. There are four strains in dengue and Den II and III are considered to be more virulent.
In India, the majority of the dengue outbreak cases were Den IIand III in 2006 and 2007. Those who have had dengue, doctors said, should be more careful.
Delhi's government said that 34 hospitals in Delhi are equipped to handle dengue cases, which have sufficient platelets and relevant drugs to deal with an outbreak, the report said.
