Reese Witherspoon spent $1,200 fixing a chicken's broken leg.

The 33-year-old actress splashed out the staggering sun after her children Ava, 10, and six-year-old Deacon were left devastated by the injury.

A source told the National Enquirer magazine: "Reese wasn't too broken up about the bird's injury, figuring it would be best to have it put down. But the kids couldn't stop crying, so she rushed it to a vet. The animal is doing fine now."

The chicken was injured on the family's ranch in California.

Reece is well known for her love of the winged creatures.

Her devotion to the birds has even seen her earn a special nickname among her pals.

A source said: "She is a chicken farmer - she has loads of birds on her ranch. The chickens are laying more eggs than she can eat, so Reese started giving eggs away to her neighbours, parents on the kids' soccer team and all her friends.

"Now all of Reese's friends joke and call her the chicken lady!"
