Iran detained 8 local employees of British Embassy
|
Iranian authorities have detained 8 local employees of the British embassy in Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday.
"Eight local employees of the British embassy in Tehran who had a considerable role in recent unrest were detained," Fars said, adding that the group has played an active role in creating riots.
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said last week Iran may downgrade ties with Britain, following expulsion of diplomats from both sides.
On Tuesday, Britain decided to expel two Iranian diplomats in retaliation of Tehran's decision to order two British diplomats to leave the country.
One day earlier, Iran took the step of expelling two British diplomats over allegations of meddling in Iran's disputed 10th presidential election.
Iran has condemned the interference in the country's internal affairs by some Western countries, particularly the United States, Britain, France and Germany.
Last week, demonstrators in Tehran gathered several times to protest alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential voting, which the Iranian authorities say was won by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but challenged by former prime minister and the opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. Source:Xinhua
