ANKARA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A third Turkish Airlines cargo plane took off for Mogadishu Thursday as part of Turkey's aid campaign, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The aid campaign is jointly launched by the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate, Religious Affairs Directorate General, Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish daily Sabah.

The plane is carrying 40 tons of food and medical supplies to drought-stricken Somalia, said the report, adding that the aid, which includes baby formula and milk powder as well as medication to cure the most common diseases in Somalia, will be distributed by representatives from TIKA and Red Crescent in Mogadishu.

The first two planes carrying aid to Somalia departed Monday with 50 tons of food and medical supplies on board.

Turkey launched the aid campaign to help efforts to fight hunger in eastern Africa where the World Food Program estimates that 10 million people already need humanitarian aid.

The UN Children's Fund estimates that more than 2 million children are malnourished and in need of lifesaving action in the region.
