DAVAO CITY, Philippines, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Two people died in a grenade explosion inside a banana plantation in Southern Philippines Thursday night, police confirmed on Friday.
Town police chief Elmer Cabuslay said the victims, Rogelio Penapiel and his cousin Billy Penapiel, died due to multiple shrapnel wounds following the blast in Poblacion village, Malalag town, in Davao del Sur province.
Cabuslay said the fatalities were security guards who were patrolling the banana plantation when the explosion occurred at around 10 p.m. Thursday.
He said police could not yet say whether the grenade was thrown at the victims or was set off as a booby trap inside the plantation. The incident is now under investigation.
