VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sukhoi fighter jets, MiG helicopters and drones up in the air; over 10,000 troops and police officers on the ground with surface-to-air missiles guarding the space in between; and frigates and submarines in the sea with missiles ready to hop up.
It is the security network covering the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to be held on Russky, a Russian Far Eastern island.
Nikolai Makarov, the Russian chief of the general staff of the armed forces, has described the security network as one pitched up to secure from all sides.
This is the first time for Russia to host the annual APEC forum, though it is not the first time for the forum to be held on an island. Neither was it the first time to be held near a sea bay, nor the first time to be held in a transformed former military base.
The heavy security measures are not just a much-ado-about-nothing show. Since leaders of the APEC members gathered for the first time in 1993, security has been a key issue alongside the topics tabled for discussion and debate.
