VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Austria's judicial system is a model for the rest of Europe, the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) said in a report on Thursday.
The study was released during a meeting of European justice ministers at the Hofburg in Vienna, the Austrian Press Agency reported.
"The judicial system must be favorable, fast, and must guarantee public peace and safety," said Austrian Federal Minister of Justice Beatrix Karl.
Karl said the CEPEJ evaluations played a central role in cross-border cooperation, as "nowhere else is there the opportunity for 46 European justice systems to be compared to one another."
Features of the Austrian system that ranked well were the short times needed to resolve civil matters at an average of 129 days compared the European average of 287 days, and contested divorces at 167 days, two to three times lower than many other European nations.
Austria and the Czech Republic were the only two nations with a civil and criminal matter clearance rate of 100 percent while taking less than 180 days to resolve.
The use of information technology in the court system was also highly-ranked, as was Austria's promotion of women into senior judge positions which occurred more than in the countries of Western Europe.
