S. Korea, US intensify tension on Korean Peninsula

(People's Daily Online)

South Korea conducted the military drill "Hoguk Exercise" from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2, 2012. The Korean Peninsula is overshadowed by frequent actions of South Korea and interference of the United States.

The "Hoguk Exercise" is an annual military drill of South Korea which is normally held in October and November. More than 240,000 South Korean soldiers from army, navy, air force, Marine Corp, and police force, and 500 U.S. soldiers participated in the military drill to "counter the provocation of the DPRK and prepare for a full-scale war."

The Korean Peninsula has recently entered another intense period. Anti-DPRK groups in South Korea had planned to launch balloons carrying 200,000 leaflets along the border between South Korea and the DPRK. The DPRK warned that it will directly launch military strikes once the leaflets are launched. The South Korean military remained the highest alert on Oct. 22. But scattering of the leaflets was finally stopped and the DPRK did not take any military strikes.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak paid an unexpected visit to the Yeonpyeong Island of West Sea near the DPRK on Oct. 18. He ordered the troops to staunchly defend the "Northern Limit Line" and prepare for a war to counter the "provocation of the DPRK." the DPRK then called words of Lee Myung-bak as flagrant provocation and declared to take revenge.
