UN chief: Ceasefire in Middle East should be sustainable

VIENNA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua)-- The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday expressed his concern over the ongoing tensions in the Middle East during his visit here in the capital of Austria.

"We see the Syrian conflict taking on troubling sectarian dimensions. We see ongoing tensions and unrest between Israelis and Palestinians," Ban said.

He stressed that both sides must adhere to the agreement that the ceasefire would be sustainable.

"The underlying issues must be addressed. More than ever, we need a negotiated two-State solution ending the occupation and the conflict. This is critical to regional stability," he added.

The UN chief made the remarks after meeting with Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger.

He also discussed the Middle East peace process and the recently agreed ceasefire between Israel and Palestine during the meeting with Fischer.
