Syrian crisis has lasted 22 months and caused more than 60,000 deaths. Massive exodus of refugees overwhelmed neighboring countries.
Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations – Arab League envoy for Syria has submitted a report to the U.N. Security Council saying that the prospect for peace in Syria is gloomy and this country is "being destroyed bit by bit".
Data of the United Nations show that the number of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries has exceeded 700,000, and there will be about 4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Syria in 2013. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the countries concerned to contribute generously to support the Syrian people in urgent need of assistance.
Humanitarian relief can only ease the pain for a small number of people temporarily. Syria conflict was originally caused by a profound political crisis and therefore must be resolved by political means to bring real changes. Without strong political solutions to stop both sides from carrying out a decisive battle, Syria will step by step be doomed to destruction.
The international community has a consensus in principle on solving Syrian crisis through political means. According to the spirit determined in the communiqué of the Geneva foreign ministers' meeting of the "action group" for Syria last June, the international community has an obligation to urge the parties to Syria crisis to put an end to the bloody conflict, start a political dialogue, and form a transitional administrative organization participated in by all social forces in Syria.
However, out of selfish interests, certain countries that do not "favor" Syrian government are still carrying out one-legged cooperation with the opposition faction in Syria and even continue to increase the support for Syria's anti-government armed force. Such unfair and unjust practice is in fact boosting the expansion of Syrian civil war. Such circumstance prevents the United Nations from playing a constructive role.
Under the current situation in Syria, it is dangerous to continue to play this double-faced tactics or it will lead to further intensified conflicts and increase the threat of terrorism. Violent conflict is difficult to stop because of inertia. It is impossible for the parties to the fierce conflict to calm down and start a political dialogue unless propelled by external forces.
Syrian crisis cannot be left continuing endlessly. The United Nations Security Council has the responsibility to actually do something.
