CONAKRY, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Flags across Guinea flew at half- mast on Monday as the western African country mourned the over 50 people killed last week in inter-ethnic clashes in the southern region of N'Zerekore, about 1,000 km from capital Conakry.

Guinea President Alpha Conde declared Monday as "a national mourning day" after the violent clashes threw the country into dismay.

A day after what eyewitnesses said was "intense" fighting, Conde addressed the nation, appealing to the population in the region to remain calm.

He promised that the government would do everything to identify and prosecute those responsible for the violence.

Calm has been restored in the town of N'Zerekore, although businesses have been slow to resume their normal operations.
