Members of the Spanish national police in the city of Pamplona on Monday arrested Luis Goni, who has been condemned to six years in prison for his membership of a group linked to Basque separatist group ETA.

Goni belongs to the group "Segi," an illegal youth organization which reportedly works as a feeder system for ETA, whose struggle for the independence of the Basque region has cost over 800 lives.

Although ETA called a permanent ceasefire in the run up to the 2011 general elections in Spain, it has still to announce its dissolution, while it has so far resisted calls to hand over any of its weapons arsenal.

Goni had not been seen since the end of July after the Spanish Supreme Court had confirmed his six-year sentence, but walked openly through the streets of Pamplona taking part in a pro-independence march in the region of Navarra.

That appearance alerted security forces, who moved to make the arrest on Monday morning.

"The government works so that everyone who has committed a crime related to terrorism is under the disposition of the law and serves their corresponding sentences," said Regional Government Delegate Carmen Alba.

This arrest came two weeks after another member of Segi, Xabier Sagordoi, was arrested by Civil Guards, also in Navarra.
