Typhoon Nari forecast to hit central Vietnam

Typhoon Nari is forecast to hit Vietnam's central coastal region between Quang Tri and Quang Ngai province on early Tuesday, with winds of 103-133 kph and gusts of 134-166 kph, according to the Vietnam National Hydro-Meteorology Forecast Center on Monday.

Accordingly, at 4 am local time on Monday, the typhoon was centered at 15.6 north, 111.8 southeast of the Philippines' Luzon Island, about 330 km east of Vietnam's Quang Tri-Quang Ngai area, with gusts of wind estimated up to 167-201 kph.

It is moving between west and west-northwest at about 15 kph and will be packing winds of the same force 130 km east of the region at 7 p.m. local time on Monday.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the typhoon would hit the Quang Tri-Quang Ngai region with winds of 103-133 kph and gusts of 134- 166 kph, the center forecast, adding that it will weaken into a depression in southern Laos on Wednesday, with winds of less than 39kph.

The storm is estimated to bring heavy rain to the area between central Nghe An and Quang Ngai provinces, and in the central Ha Tinh-Quang Nam region. Sea levels will likely rise 3-4 meters high.

Local authorities were instructed to prepare plans in response to the coming typhoon. Vessels were called to anchor in safe places, and residents get ready to evacuate off the vulnerable areas, according to the center.

Typhoon Nari will be the 11th storm that hit Vietnam since the beginning of this year.
