Washing machines fail quality checks

PANASONIC failed a second quality check after the company applied for a retest as some of its washing machines were found to have performed poorly in washing, energy efficiency and power consumption, the city's quality watchdog said.

Some LG washing machines were found to have poor rinse cycles, but the company did not ask for a retest, said Shen Weimin, deputy director of the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.

Panasonic and LG denied the results and said the products passed tests by third parties.

The city's quality watchdog also said yesterday no toxic chemicals were found in snack seeds produced at local factories that reportedly added industrial powder and excessive additives into seeds in earlier media reports.

All snack seeds produced by 58 companies that were checked met standards, Shen said.

An investigative media report last week found green tea flavor snack seeds turned water green within 20 seconds due to a possibly harmful dye. The report accused a factory in Songjiang District of using industrial talc containing carcinogenic substances to make seeds look bright and smooth.

Officials also said aluminum content is not included in the national standard in response to earlier reports that eating seeds may lead to senile dementia.

Shen also said seeds naturally contain small amounts of aluminum.

Meanwhile, Shen said the bureau was looking into Bright Dairy. The quality watchdog in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, reported it had found about 30 percent of the dairy giant's fresh milk that was checked contained too much bacteria.
