Kenya's Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich won the 40th Berlin Marathon by breaking the world record with 2:03:23 here on Sunday.
The 31-year-old broke the old record of 2:03:38 set by his fellow countrymen Patrick Makasu.
Second placed Eliud Kipchoge finished the 42,195 km course in 2:04:05, which is a new personal best, followed by Geoffrey Kipsang, who crossed the finish line with 2:06:26.
"I made my dream come true. My plan was to push and it really worked out. It is a very nice course. It is wonderful, a lot of people are cheering. I really love it," Kipsang said after the race.
Florence Kiplagat won the women's competition with 2:21:13 as she was able to leave Sharon Cherop in second with 2:22:28.
It is the second triumph for Kiplagat after 2011. Kazakhstan-born German long distance runner Irina Mikitenko completed the race in third with 2:24:54.
The Berlin Marathon was first initiated in 1974 and is held on the last weekend in September. The course is considered as one of fastest worldwide.
