Upon overview of the world trend at the end of the year, Mr. Wu Jianmin asked a serious question: Will a new cold war break out?
Who want to wage new “Cold War?” In the West, there are notable figures advocating abandoning Cold War thinking, as well as politicians that are enthusiastic about new “Cold War.”
Margaret Thatcher once said the West should support Japan and India to prevent China from obtaining the leadership in Asia although the Cold War is over.
Richard Lugar, the former chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs said the United States and the Soviet Union have strived for hegemony in the past five decades, and that would happen between the United States and China over the next fifty years.
Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts and Republican presidential candidate contender exclaimed, "We can't just sit back and let China run all over us.”
Facing the new calls for another “Cold War”, China should make its stand clear. China adheres to peaceful development based on its basic national conditions, cultural traditions and its country’s fundamental and long-term interests. It certainly should continue to hold high the banner of socialism, because only socialism can save China and promote China’s development.
However, China’s socialism is not the kind of implacable opponent of the Western world in the days of the Cold War, but is one that adapts to economic development trends, integrates into the world market system and promotes its modernization in the process of globalization.
Facing such a developing giant, cooperation benefits both while contention hurts both even for the United States. Despite the many troubles between China and the United States, they also have many common interests, common responsibilities and common strategic assessments.
To develop a partnership on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit is the only correct strategic decision for them. As long as both China and the United States calm down, the “new Cold War” is unlikely to start.
